Civil Engineering Laboratory

Civils Lab Panoramic Photo

Our modern Geotechnics lab is used to carry out tests on soil and rock samples with tri-axial test equipment, consolidation odometers, potentiometers, shear boxes and more.

The machinery in the structures lab (to the right as you enter the door) is all fully computerised. Structures of concrete are put through their paces - tests have included new forms of drainage material used under large car parks to help rain water to soak away gradually and thereby helping to avoid flooding.

There are also facilities for students to get hands on and make concrete for testing. Then they get to squash the concrete afterwards! Our dedicated technician is always willing to help and discuss projects with students.
