Industry
The School maintains close links with the business community, an External Advisory Committee, and can offer various business experience schemes. Summer placements are the most popular choice, for which you can gain credits towards your degree through the Commercial and Industrial Experience option module. MEng students can take two placements, in the summers after the end of their second and third years. It is also possible to suspend studies for an appropriate one-year placement.
We work closely with schemes such as ShellSTEP and The Year in Industry who help students find placements and provide training throughout. Many placement students are able to obtain sponsorship for the remainder of the degree course when the employer wishes to retain them for future employment. This reduces the pressure on students to find employment during the final year.
We encourage all students to undertake placements with employers as we believe that after degree subject and grade, the experience gained on a placement is the most important factor in increasing the attractiveness of a student to a prospective employer.
Research projects
As a research-led School there are always numerous
research projects in progress, funded by industry, charities, government
departments and research councils. This research informs the development of the
material taught on our degree programmes as well as providing opportunities for
exciting project work.
Student projects undertaken in the third and fourth years are often linked to our research activities and may involve working with industrial partners. Recent projects have involved the design and construction of an autonomous hovering platform, modelling of fluid flow around a car and 3D CAD scale representation of the Met Office.
