Microscopy Laboratory

Microscopy Laboratory Panoramic Photo

The Microscopy suite is a school facility offering an analytical service for the business community, undergraduates, researchers and staff. The suite offers numerous imaging techniques for material analysis including reflection, transmission, polarisation, florescence and micro hardness optical microscopes. Electron microscopy is provided by a HITACHI Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Oxford Instrument's INCA system. The Explorer Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) provides three-dimensional analysis of surface properties in the micro and nano metric range.

The School also has a large clean room where our deposition and bio-photonic suites are located. It provides a clean environment for sample preparation and research projects and houses a fully automated, computer controlled multi magnetron Nordiko 2000 sputtering system for the deposition of thin films together with optical annealing systems.

The images below show students doing project work using the different microscopes.
